💼The opportunity:
We are looking for a Junior Backup Specialist who will support the Backup team in daily operations on Veritas NetBackup, helping to ensure the continuity of the backup/restore service. The candidate will work with procedures and runbooks, gradually becoming autonomous in troubleshooting, policy, and application restore.
Acquisition of knowledge in the field of backup on Azure and AWS.
RAL: €26K - €48K
💻 Responsibilities
- Daily monitoring of jobs in Veritas NetBackup and alert management;
- Initial guided troubleshooting of common errors;
- Execution of standard restores (files/VM/simple DB) with supervision;
- Basic system operations on backup targets:
- On Windows: services, Event Viewer, volumes/VSS, Task Scheduler, firewall;
- Network checks (DNS, ports, routing) and disk space.
- Support for policy/SLP based on templates; opening of changes/tickets;
- Collaboration with DBA/Sysadmin for application-consistent backups;
- Updating documentation and operational reports (success rate, capacity).
🛠️ Requirements (Prerequisites)
Basic system administration skills (mandatory)
- Linux: basic commands, services (systemd), log management, permissions, mount, SSH;
- Windows Server: services, VSS, Event Viewer, shares/NTFS permissions;
- Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, ports/firewall, concepts of latency/throughput;
- Storage: SAN/NAS/DAS, snapshot vs. clone, concept of deduplication/compression;
- Scripting: basic Bash and/or PowerShell (log parsing, simple automations);
- Basic ITSM/ITIL (Incident/Change/Problem) and good documentation practices.
Database fundamentals
- ACID concepts, transactions, checkpoint, journaling/redo/WAL, PITR;
- Types of DB backups: full, differential/incremental, transaction log; hot/online vs. cold/offline; crash-consistent vs. application-consistent coherence;
- Introductory knowledge of the most common databases (at least one):
- SQL Server: recovery model (Full/Simple), log backup, restore chain;
- Oracle: ARCHIVELOG, basic RMAN concepts;
- PostgreSQL: WAL, base backup + WAL for PITR;
- MySQL/InnoDB: redo/binlog, snapshot vs. dump;
- Ability to read a typical DB error during backup/restore and correctly involve the DBA.
NetBackup – Required Basics
- Policy & Schedules, SLP, retention and backup windows;
- Understanding of common status codes and performing ordered checks (network → credentials → policy → storage).
Nice to Have
- VMware (VADP, snapshot), DB plug-ins (RMAN/SQL), basic cloud knowledge (AWS/Azure/GCP);
- NetBackup architecture: Master/Media/Client, Catalog, Storage Unit, MSDP;
- Veritas certification (including willingness to obtain it).
